Counselling & CBT
Counselling
Deciding to embark on counselling takes courage. I provide a warm, non-judgemental and safe space to explore the issues that are troubling you.
Talking to a person outside of your personal life can help you to understand yourself better and gain new perspectives.
My professional background and training allows me to draw from many different therapeutic approaches to enhance our work together whilst always keeping in mind a honest and trusting relationship between counsellor and client is what matters most.
I offer both short term and long term counselling. We can discuss your needs in our initial meeting and we will review this throughout therapy as your needs may change.
CBT
Cognitive Behavioural Theapy (CBT) is based around the idea that our thoughts can influence how we feel and how we behave. For example we may interpret a situation in negative way leading us to experience negative emotions and behave in a more unhelpful way. We can easily get stuck in this cycle.
In CBT I will help you notice, challenge and change unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours so that you will feel better.
CBT has lots of strategies that help with problems you are currently experiencing, although we may look to the past to understand where these thinking patterns developed.
CBT is an evidenced based therapy that has been researched and reviewed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), who provide guidance for the NHS on the most effective ways to treat mental health difficulties.
NICE recommends CBT for the treatment of:
-
Depression
-
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
-
Bipolar disorder
-
Anxiety disorders (including panic attacks and post-traumatic stress disorder)
There is also good evidence that CBT helps treating many other conditions including:
-
Chronic fatigue
-
Chronic pain
-
Sleep difficulties
-
Anger management
The number of sessions you will need will vary depending on what you want to work on and we can review this regularly. It is usually between 6-20 sessions.
